Dr Pragnesh Joshi is a specialist cardiothoracic surgeon. He specialises in all types of heart surgery with special interest in beating heart surgery and minimally invasive heart and lung surgeries. He is a fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Australia.
He has extensive experience as surgeon in Australia and overseas. He obtained specialist qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery from Mumbai University in 2002 in India. He worked as overseas fellow/Senior Registrar at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane(’04-’07) and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Nedlands (’11-current) prior to obtaining fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He gained substantial exposure to minimally invasive valve surgery at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane and also spent some time at Heart Center Leipzig, Germany. He is vastly experienced surgeon for Beating heart bypass surgery. He is proficient in all types of heart and lung surgeries with special interest in following surgeries.
Dr Joshi has been instrumental in introducing new procedures and techniques to Perth including the following.
Hybrid catheter and surgical ablation of AF:
He successfully introduced the thoracoscopic AF ablation program to Perth. This is the only program of its kind in the Australasia region. He is one of the proctors and Perth is an international training site for other units to visit and learn this new surgical approach.
Bilateral thoracoscopic ablation of left atrium for AF ablation:
This unique technique is a minimally invasive port access AF ablation on the beating heart. He had an opportunity to bring this technique to Perth in 2021. He has performed the most number of VATS AF ablation outside of Europe
Right Anterior Thoracotomy Aortic Valve Replacement
This is a minimally invasive technique for aortic valve replacement. He visited the USA in 2017 to learn this procedure and introduced it to Perth later in 2017. In the era of TAVI, this is a very good option for minimally invasive surgery for those patients who don’t want to have sternotomy for aortic valve replacement.
Minimally invasive off pump coronary artery bypass surgery
This procedure is also known as “MIDCAB”. He introduced MIDCAB at SCGH in its current form and also proctored another surgeon to perform this procedure. We presented the results of early experience at Annual Conference of CTS Australia and New Zealand.
Thoracoscopic occlusion of left atrial appendage with Atriclip
This elegant surgery is used to occlude left atrial appendage in patients with AF and contraindication for anticoagulation. He introduced this procedure to Perth in 2018. He has the largest experience of this procedure in Australia and has trained other surgeons to carry out this procedure
Robotic Thoracic Surgery
Robotic thoracic surgery is a technique that is used in many disciplines but has shown a reduction in hospital stay, reduced blood loss and probably better cancer surgery in those undergoing thoracic surgery. Dr Joshi has been able to successfully introduce Robotic thoracic surgery to WA in 2022.
